The Skipper's keychain is made from beautiful, durable vegetable-tanned bridle leather, and inspired by the typological connection between Eliakim and St. Peter,. Embedded on the keychain are the scriptural references of the handing over of the "keys of authority" in both the Old and New Testaments (Isaiah 22:20, Matthew 16:18).
Eliakim was given the keys to the House of David, and title as Master of the Palace. He wore robes of honor indicating his special authority, and was to be a "father" to those in the kingdom. The keys to the kingdom symbolized Eliakim's authority to open/shut the doors, granting access to the King and making decisions on his behalf.
Similarly, Jesus handed Peter, the first Pope, the keys to the kingdom of heaven. The pope also wears special robes and bears the title "Holy Father". St. Peter was given the authority to bind/loose on earth, which would be bound/loosed in heaven.
